Joshua Adland, Director
Joshua Adland is the Marketing Manager at Kaplan K12 Learning Services, the institutional arm of Kaplan’s K-12 operations, where he manages communications, partnerships, research, and events. In a prior role at Kaplan, he managed K-12 private tutoring programs across New York City. Before joining Kaplan in 2011, Joshua was a high school history teacher at Explorations Academy in the South Bronx, which he came to as part of the Teach for America program. He has a B.A. in Politics and Middle East Studies from Brandeis University, as well as an M.S. in Teaching from Pace University.
Raphael Bejarano, Director
Raphael Bejarano is the Director of Strategic Planning for Jefferies Group LLC, where he focuses on special projects for Jefferies and its parent company, Leucadia National Corp. Raphael read history at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University, where he graduated with First Class Honors. Prior to joining the Board, Raphael was a mentor with Minds Matter for three years. Raphael is also actively involved with The Center for Jewish History. He is originally from London and Tel Aviv.
Amit Bhandari, Director
Amit Bhandari is a Partner in the Financial Services practice of Oliver Wyman, an international management consultancy. Prior to joining the firm’s New York Office in 2006, Mr. Bhandari managed the Strategic Planning department of First Horizon, a top 30 U.S. Bank. While in Memphis, Mr. Bhandari was a fellow at the Leadership Academy and an inaugural member of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the School of Business at Christian Brothers University. Mr. Bhandari holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Business and a BS from the Stern School of Business at NYU.
Shannon Daly, Director
Ms. Daly is a CPA and President of Tucker Tax LLC, an accounting practice located in Greenwich, CT specializing in tax preparation for airline personnel. In addition to her work as a tax accountant, Ms. Daly runs a private tutoring business. Focusing on SAT and ACT prep, Ms. Daly has become a much sought after resource for students in Westchester, NY. Her experience as a private tutor led her to the test prep program at Minds Matter. Ms. Daly holds a BA from Trinity College and a MS from Pace University.
Katie Dugan, Director
Katie is an attorney in the Jersey City office of Genova Burns Giantomasi Webster LLC. Kate concentrates her practice in employment litigation on behalf of employers. Specifically, Katie represents employers in defense of claims of discrimination, sexual harassment, wrongful termination and retaliatory discharge. Katie earned her B.A. in sociology from the College of the Holy Cross and her J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law. Katie previously served on the Board of Directors of Gilda’s Club of Northern New Jersey. Katie joined Minds Matter in 2012 as a mentor in the Sophomore Program.
Michel El-Khoury, Director
Michel El-Khoury is a Senior Consultant in the Strategy & Operations practice of Deloitte Consulting. His work revolves around developing and implementing strategies to improve operational and financial performance of Financial Services and Telecom firms. Prior to joing Deloitte, Michel was a technology consultant for Ericsson. Michel holds an MBA from Cornell’s Johnson Graduate School of Management and a B.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of Ottawa, Canada.
Adam Fitzner, Director
Adam Fitzner is currently a Principal at Corinthian Capital, a middle market private equity firm. Previously, he was a Managing Director in Evercore’s Restructuring Group and a Director a Miller Buckfire where he assisted companies and investors with restructuring, financing and M&A transactions. Before that, he worked in several roles where he was instrumental in restructuring and turning around middle market businesses. Mr. Fitzner graduated from Lehigh University with a dual B.S. in Finance and Marketing, and received an MBA from Cornell’s Johnson School, where he was a Park Fellow. He also currently serves on the Board of Britnell Ventures, Inc.
Jeff Goldsmith, Director
Jeff Goldsmith is currently an Executive Director at JPMorgan Chase, where he is a senior leader of the Internal Consulting Team. He previously worked as a consultant with The Boston Consulting Group and with First Manhattan Consulting Group. Mr. Goldsmith graduated from Cornell University with a BS in Hotel Administration and with an MBA from Columbia Business School.
Erika Halstead, Vice Chair
Erika Halstead has been involved with Mind Matter since 2009 and on the Board since 2011. Erika is currently the Senior Program Officer at the New York Council for the Humanities where she directs youth and community engagement programs. Before joining the Council, Erika was a bilingual teacher in Austin and later taught English literature at Hunter College in Manhattan. She holds dual degrees in English and Economics from the University of Texas at Austin and is pursuing a Masters in Education at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Andrew Jacobi, Director
Andrew Jacobi is the Founder and Managing Partner of Untamed Sandwiches, a quick serve restaurant concept located in the Bryant Park neighborhood of Manhattan. Previously, Andrew served as the Director of Sales and Marketing for Wild Idea Buffalo company. Andrew was also an Investment Analyst at private equity and mezzanine finance firm DLJ Investment Partners, and prior to that, he worked for JPMorgan as an Investment Banking Analyst. Andrew has been a volunteer with Minds Matter for six years, as a Mentor, Team Leader, Co-Director of the Sophomore Program, and now Board member. Andrew holds an MBA from Columbia University and a B.A. from Middlebury College.
Brendan McLaughlin, Director
Brendan McLaughlin is a financial services professional with over 13 years of experience. Most recently, he was a Vice President at Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, where he focused on business development and strategic initiatives within the Global Corporate & Investment Bank and Global Wealth Management divisions. Prior to that, he was Assistant Vice President of Investor Relations at Citigroup. He began his career in equity research at Citigroup, covering the transportation industry. Brendan has been involved with Minds Matter since 2003. Most recently, he served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. He has held several positions on the New York Executive Committee and has also served on the National Executive Committee. Brendan is currently pursuing a Masters in Real Estate Development at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University. He holds a B.B.A. in Finance from James Madison University.
Kim Moore, Director
Kimberly M. Moore has worked with various non-profit organizations, in fundraising and development, over a decade. Kimberly has also volunteered with a number of organizations and causes that focus on youth, education, and women. She was formerly a Mentor with Minds Matter and is proud to put her background to use as a board member this year. She is currently working with The Episcopal Church to establish a major gifts development office. She received her B.A. in English and Asian Studies from Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
Tricia Morente, Director
Tricia Morente brings over ten years of experience in building institutions through the intersection of business strategy, organizational development, and customer insight. As part of the senior management team at LifeSpring Hospitals in India, she directed Strategy and Marketing, leading efforts to scale the maternity hospital. She was an Acuman Fund Fellow and serves as Faculty at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, where she works with low- and middle-income countries around health financing and systems improvement. She has advised healthcare, media, and economic development organizations including Pfizer, Merck, Johnson & Johnson, The New York Times, and the United Nations, and has worked in India, the Phillipines, Thailand, Rwanda, Ghana, Australia, and Canada. She received her B.A. from Harvard University, MBA from Columbia Business School and MA in International Affairs from Columbia University. In her free time, she is an amateur NYC historian and trapeze artist.
Minhaj Patel, Director
Minhaj Patel is Executive Director of Investments for LFG, the private investment business of the Lowy family, where he is focused on investing in publicly listed equities. Prior to LFG, Minhaj was a Director at Citi Principal Strategies, a hedge fund affiliate of Citigroup, and has also served in Senior Investment Analyst roles at Magnetar Capital and Highline Capital Management. He started his career at Wasserstein Perella Merchant Banking where he focused on private equity and venture capital investments. Minhaj graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College with a double major in Economics and Psychology and a minor in Applied Mathematics. He spent 3 years as a mentor with Minds Matter, prior to joining the Board. He is also actively involved with the Association for Development of Pakistan, a US-based non-profit focused on engaged philanthropy in Pakistan. Minhaj is originally from Karachi, Pakistan.
Dennis Ruhl, Director
Dennis Ruhl is a Managing Director at J.P. Morgan Asset Management (JPMAM), where he heads the U.S. Behavioral Finance Small Cap and Quantitative Research groups. He began his career at JPMAM in 1999 and was named JPMorganChase Mentor of the Year in 2003. Mr. Ruhl was involved with Minds Matter from 1999 to 2007 and served in a variety of roles including as the founding Chair of the National Board, Chair of the New York Board, President of the Executive Committee, and Co-Director of the Prep Program. He currently serves as a Regional Vice Chair of the MIT Educational Council, coordinating interviews for all Manhattan-area applicants to MIT. Dennis also served on the Board of Directors of the MIT Club of New York from 2001 to 2010. Dennis has his Master’s Degree in Computer Science and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science, all from MIT.
Steven Song, Chair of the Board
Steven Song is a Vice President at Edgewood Holdings, a family office focused on private equity investments. He began his career as an investment banker at JPMorgan in 2001 and was selected as a Training Mentor for the first year JPMorgan IB analyst class of 2003. Steven has been a Board Member with Minds Matter since 2011. He currently serves or is an observer on the Board of Directors for Ford Models, AHN International and Sanchez Resources. Steven graduated with a joint Bachelor of Art degree in Economics and Mathematics from Columbia University.
Jeff Vogel, Director
Jeff Vogel is a Principal at Court Square Capital, a middle market private equity investment firm. Prior to joining Court Square in 2004, Jeff was an analyst at Morgan Stanley in their Technology Investment Banking Group. Jeff has been involved with Minds Matter since 2004 and has served in a variety of roles including Co-Director of Mentees in the Senior Program, Team Leader and Mentor in the Junior and Senior Programs. Jeff received his B.S.E. in Operations Research and Financial Engineering, a Certificate in Finance, and a Certificate in Engineering Management Systems from Princeton University. Jeff also serves on the boards of ANCILE Solutions, Inc., Encompass Digital Media, Newmarket International, Rocket Software, and Strategic Products & Services. He previously served on the board of Auto Europe Group, CompuCom Systems, and as a board observer of NTELOS Holdings Corp.
